Bell Canada has broadened its 5G collaboration with Nokia to include cloud solutions and open radio access network (O-RAN) technology. In partnership, they will introduce Nokia’s Cloud RAN software and Open Fronthaul radios, aimed at enhancing Bell’s current and future network structures.
A key part of this deployment is Nokia’s AirScale portfolio, integrated into Red Hat OpenShift and Dell Technologies infrastructure. Dell PowerEdge servers will fulfill processing needs at various locations, enhancing efficiency across the network.
Additionally, Bell will utilize Nokia’s AI-focused network management platform, MantaRay NM, which strategizes on optimizing operations. A cloud-native approach using Red Hat OpenShift is expected to boost adaptability and scalability.
Mark McDonald, Bell Canada’s senior vice president of Networks, shared his insights, expressing that the extended partnership with Nokia is pivotal for Bell. It taps into advanced Cloud RAN technology to both improve current capabilities and lay groundwork for future Open RAN uses. He underscored the importance of network agility, scalability, and vendor diversity in delivering superior customer experiences and supporting their leadership in 5G innovation.
Nokia’s President of Mobile Networks, Tommi Uitto, echoed this sentiment. He highlighted the significance of their RAN technology portfolio and the anyRAN strategy, appreciating their long-standing support role for Bell. He emphasized the readiness and scalability of solutions for supporting new use cases and revenue opportunities.
Bell provides 5G services on 3.5 GHz and 3.8 GHz spectrum bands. Their “5G+” service was initiated in 2022, expanding coverage in Ontario, Atlantic, and Western Canada. Currently, nearly 51% of Canadians benefit from 5G+ coverage. Initially, their 5G services launched in 2020 in key urban areas such as Montréal and Vancouver.
In 2020, Bell collaborated with Ericsson for nationwide 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) deployment, beginning with Nokia equipment. This successful collaboration sets the stage for Bell to continue enhancing their 5G infrastructure and stay at the forefront of innovation.
