Meta is embarking on its largest expansion yet, introducing ‘Meta AI’ in 41 European countries. This AI-powered assistant will initially cater to six European languages, with plans for further enlargement. Accessible at no cost via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, users can engage with Meta AI through a distinct blue circle icon in these platforms. It is designed for one-on-one or group conversations, with the group chat feature starting on WhatsApp and soon coming to Messenger and Instagram Direct Messaging.
This extensive rollout follows Meta AI’s U.S. debut in 2023, which encountered delays due to the stringent European regulatory landscape, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Europe requires robust data protection measures, necessitating Meta’s compliance to deploy the assistant within these boundaries.
A major challenge involved how Meta AI’s large language models (LLMs) utilize publicly available content on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Meta had to assure that this practice aligned with European privacy expectations.
In a statement, the company expressed, “It’s taken longer than we would have liked to get our AI technology into the hands of people in Europe as we continue to navigate its complex regulatory system – but we’re glad we’re finally here.”
They also announced the upcoming availability of Meta AI’s chat function in six European languages, aiming to reach parity with the U.S. in the future. This expansion marks a significant step in making AI accessible across continents, navigating the complex waters of regional data protection requirements.
