In a strategic collaboration, Taara, spun out from Alphabet’s X division, has partnered with telecom distributor Digicomm International to enhance the deployment of its Lightbridge technology. Taara, innovating with “fiber-over-the-air” technology, aims to bring broadband-quality connectivity across diverse sectors, including enterprises and municipalities. This partnership utilizes Digicomm’s distribution prowess to penetrate new markets and reduce implementation timelines.

Lightbridge operates using advanced optical communication, steering light beams through the air with precision to deliver internet speeds comparable to fiber optics. The deployment is particularly advantageous in areas where laying traditional cables is financially or logistically challenging. Taara’s technology can reach speeds up to 20 Gbps over distances of 20 kilometers, which is enticing for both urban and rural connectivity gaps.

This venture strengthens Taara’s commercial footprint while aligning with efforts to promote digital equity. The scalable and rapid deployment nature of Lightbridge addresses connectivity challenges without the constraints of fiber installation. By tapping into Digicomm’s telecom expertise, Taara is positioned to widely disseminate its cutting-edge solutions.

Earlier, Taara showcased a silicon photonics chip capable of swift data transmission through air. The device, leveraging an optical phased array, marks a leap in precision and performance for steering and relaying light beams. Anticipated for launch in 2026, this could significantly bolster Taara’s existing solutions.

The rapid evolution from Alphabet’s X to an independent company underscores Taara’s substantial progress. CEO Mahesh Krishnaswamy cited inspirations from previous connectivity projects, stating, “Inspired by Loon’s breakthrough work… our philosophy… has always been to… test it with partners to learn as quickly as possible.” This ethos has led Taara’s operational expansion, addressing connectivity deficiencies worldwide.

Additionally, Taara’s collaboration with Vodafone demonstrated aerial connectivity using drones equipped with Taara nodes. This initiative focuses on restoring communications promptly after disasters, providing high-capacity links where ground support is incapacitated.
