During the recent Joint Viking 2025 military exercise in northern Norway, Nokia, alongside its partners, showcased the potential of 5G technology to enhance battlefield communication and coordination. The exercise, involving over 10,000 troops from various NATO countries, aimed to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency across allied forces.
Nokia deployed its advanced 5G AirScale radio systems and standalone core technology specifically adapted for defense use. These systems provided commanders with real-time intelligence, helping them make better decisions and streamline military operations in harsh Arctic conditions. The biennial exercise, held above the Arctic Circle, focuses on improving collaboration among NATO members, safeguarding the northern flank, and testing Norway’s capacity to integrate allied support rapidly.
The Norwegian Defence Agency has partnered with mobile operators and the telecom company Lyse to advance tactical communication capabilities. According to Kennet Nomeland from Norway’s Ministry of Defense, the collaboration leverages commercial technology to create solutions that work even in environments lacking GPS signals. Nokia’s lightweight, energy-efficient radios and software played a key role in ensuring the exercise’s success.
Giuseppe Targia from Nokia emphasized that the secure, scalable connectivity 5G offers is crucial for modern military communication. The success of the trial reinforces the Norwegian Armed Forces’ leadership in adopting cutting-edge communication technology for complex tactical missions.
