Rogers Communications has stepped into the future by launching a satellite-to-mobile service in Canada. This pioneering effort marks the first instance of direct satellite connectivity to mobile phones in the nation, promising to extend coverage beyond traditional networks. With this, Rogers has dramatically expanded its coverage to over 5.4 million square kilometers, addressing longstanding communication gaps.

The new service is operational through a beta program at no cost to users, providing a lifeline of connectivity in remote regions. During the beta, users can send texts and utilize text-to-911 services. In October, when the beta phase ends, these services will be integrated into Rogers’ Ultimate Plan at no additional cost, while others can subscribe for CAD15 per month.

In essence, the service employs a combination of Rogers’ national wireless spectrum and low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology. This setup ensures accessibility for most modern smartphones. Users’ phones automatically connect to a satellite signal in areas devoid of cellular coverage, empowering them to send messages and access emergency services.

The core areas of impact include remote locations like the Rocky Mountains, northern Quebec, and Hudson Bay’s southern coasts. This service significantly bridges communication gaps, offering a public safety net in areas traditional networks can’t reach.

Tony Staffieri, Rogers’ president and CEO, expressed pride in introducing this technology. He emphasized its potential to keep Canadians connected and safe in previously unreachable places, marking a milestone in wireless connectivity.

Mark Kennedy, Rogers’ CTO, indicated that smartphones could now function as satellite phones because of this integration with satellite technology, allowing access to crucial services in remote areas. The service is designed to perform optimally in outdoor areas with an unobstructed sky view.
