Virgin Media O2 has made significant strides in extending its high-speed broadband and mobile network coverage across Scotland, now reaching half the population. During a visit by First Minister John Swinney to VMO2‘s new office in Lanarkshire, the company highlighted its accomplishments, including investments of £330 million in expanding its ultrafast broadband network. This expansion covers over 1.5 million homes and businesses.

However, some details from VMO2’s claims raise questions. For instance, VMO2 asserts it is Scotland’s largest gigabit provider, but Openreach previously announced it covered half of Scottish homes and businesses with its fiber network. The lack of recent data from Openreach leaves VMO2’s claim on uncertain ground.

Despite the ambiguity, VMO2 has made progress, building mobile infrastructure in Scotland. Its 5G network covers more than 50% of the population. The company recently launched 5G standalone services in 54 towns and cities.

Moreover, VMO2 has made significant improvements, upgrading its network in over 28,000 Scottish postcodes. However, details about the specific improvements or reliability enhancements remain unspecified.

For corporate social responsibility, Virgin Media O2 is working with the Scottish Government and Citizens Advice to provide 1,200 refurbished smartphones to those in need, and started a free WiFi initiative for mobile libraries.

First Minister John Swinney highlighted the importance of collaboration in boosting connectivity. He praised VMO2 for its role in Scotland’s digital growth. He also acknowledged other providers’ roles in enhancing Scotland’s network infrastructure.

As developments continue, it remains to be seen how other operators will respond to VMO2’s efforts in expanding its Scottish network. The industry awaits updates from Openreach and others regarding network advancements in the region.
