SK Telecom has unveiled its third 6G white paper, known as ATHENA, expanding on its long-term vision for network evolution beyond 2030. Building on its series commenced in 2023, this latest document outlines how communication infrastructure is expected to adapt in the AI era.
The ATHENA framework emphasizes AI-native architecture, zero trust security, hyper-connectivity, openness, and cloud-native operations. Central to this vision are two paths for AI integration: “AI for network,” which harnesses real-time analytics for autonomous optimization, and “network for AI,” which supports AI-driven services efficiently.
The paper indicates the importance of expanded virtualization and open interfaces. These components work with general-purpose hardware for increased flexibility in radio, core, and transport domains. Under ATHENA, SK Telecom aims to apply AI- and cloud-based automation across all network layers, enhancing AI-driven services.
Globally, SK Telecom is active in standard-setting bodies like 3GPP, ITU, and the O-RAN Alliance, and is a board member of the AI-RAN Alliance. This participation is influential as it shapes network evolution amid emerging technologies.
Yu Takki, head of SK Telecom’s network technology office, commented on their vision: “Despite uncertainties in the 6G era, we will continue to create new growth opportunities by leading the evolution of future communication infrastructure over the next decade, prioritizing customer value and combining AI, virtualization, openness, and zero trust security.”
In 2026, SK Telecom plans to debut key technologies at MWC Barcelona, such as AI agents for networks, AI-RAN technology, and on-device AI-based antenna optimization.
AI infrastructure is becoming a vital component of the carrier’s growth strategy. SK Telecom’s CFO, Jong-seok Park, recently shared that the company aims to develop its AI business scale, noting growth in AI data center revenues due to increased utilization and strategic acquisitions.
By leveraging AI, SK Telecom aims to foster a technology-driven future. This approach not only optimizes its existing network but also lays a foundation for handling more sophisticated AI applications. As SK Telecom pushes forward, AI’s integration may redefine networks and set new benchmarks in the telecommunications sector.
