BT Business recently announced its pioneering position as the UK’s inaugural provider of a complete suite of sovereign services. The package includes sovereign connectivity, voice, cloud, and AI options for both public and private sectors. This suite aims to keep sensitive workloads within the UK, enhancing operational control and expediting the deployment of digital services, without diminishing security, resilience, or compliance.
In an exciting collaboration, BT is working with Nscale and NVIDIA to bolster the UK’s sovereign AI capabilities. This partnership will lead to the development of new AI solutions that allow businesses to run AI workloads locally while scaling capacity as needed. The initiative supports a variety of functions, from operational automation to advanced analytics and AI-enhanced customer service, while adhering to data residency, security, and regulatory standards.
Moreover, BT is unveiling a Sovereign Cloud solution, designed specifically for managing sensitive or regulated workloads. Hosted entirely in the UK, the platform provides compute, storage, and backup functionalities. This is supported by Rackspace Technology’s data center infrastructure, bolstered by services from UK-based, security-cleared teams. These teams assist with migration, operations, and ongoing compliance.
Assembly Research recently published a report highlighting that data security concerns are a barrier to AI adoption in the UK. BT suggests that embracing digital sovereignty could instill the necessary confidence for organizations to expand AI usage securely. This expansion could unlock an estimated £18 billion in productivity gains for the economy. The report also points out the vast commercial potential for sovereign infrastructure, advocating for rapid investment in local data centers and sovereign cloud expansion.
The emphasis on using domestically controlled systems may also simplify regulatory compliance. It could help organizations meet the UK’s data protection and sector-specific regulations more easily, thus avoiding potential fines of up to £1 billion for non-compliance with GDPR.
