Proximus, Fiberklaar, Wyre, and Telenet have solidified their commitment to advancing high-speed gigabit internet in Flanders, Belgium. These companies are streamlining operations by signing detailed agreements to accelerate network deployment while minimizing redundant civil work. This move is pending regulatory approval, but it marks a significant leap towards widespread gigabit connectivity.
This collaboration took root in July 2024 when these companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The primary goal was to hasten gigabit network deployment, ensuring faster and more efficient coverage for homes and businesses. Working hand-in-hand with the Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) and the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications (BIPT), they sought regulatory compliance. This culminated in a public consultation to guarantee fair and non-discriminatory access to their network infrastructures.
Following further discussions with the BCA and BIPT after public consultation, the companies have now entered into comprehensive cooperation agreements. These agreements cover all facets of their collaboration, with continued regulatory oversight.
A vital aspect of this collaboration is the focus on fiber technology to bolster digital infrastructure. Fiber investments are crucial for innovation and economic strengthening. In less densely populated areas, Wyre and Fiberklaar will construct fiber-to-the-home networks. This ensures access to Proximus, Wyre, and their wholesale customers. In rural areas, hybrid fiber-coax technology will expand coverage, achieving gigabit speeds across Flanders. Meanwhile, in urban centers, operators will independently establish networks, maintaining service quality and speed.
This strategic approach promises a more rapid rollout, wider fiber accessibility, and decreased construction-related disruptions. Importantly, the agreement includes a commitment to offer network access on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.
Reaching this milestone underscores the tenacious efforts of Proximus, Fiberklaar, Wyre, and Telenet. The agreement is a testament to their foresight and dedication to enhancing consumer, business, and digital economy interests in the region. The companies acknowledge the extensive resources mobilized by the BCA and BIPT to secure this pivotal agreement, reiterating their commitment to cooperate fully with regulatory bodies for implementation.
