Telia has made a notable advancement in the telecommunications industry with the introduction of Telia Critical IoT Connectivity, a groundbreaking service in Sweden utilizing 5G standalone (SA) technology. Officially launched today, this service aims to meet the security and reliability demands of sectors such as emergency services, energy, transport, industry, and healthcare.
The decision to base Telia Critical IoT Connectivity on 5G SA technology allows it to exploit capabilities such as network slicing, ultra-low latency, and enhanced security. Vodafone‘s entire 5G network in Sweden supports this new service. It manages network traffic more efficiently, offering reliable connectivity for essential applications, especially during peak times.
Drawing insights from Telia’s NorthStar 5G innovation program, launched in 2023, the new service gives partners early access to advanced 5G capabilities. This innovation network allows entities like the Swedish Armed Forces and the mining company Boliden to utilize state-of-the-art 5G features.
The nationwide reach of Telia’s 5G network is impressive, covering 99.9% of the Swedish population and over 94% of the country’s land area. This robust coverage ensures consistent service availability. Fredrik Stenberg, Head of B2B, Telia Sweden, comments on the new offering: “Through Telia Critical IoT Connectivity, we’re creating the conditions for companies and organizations to use new digital solutions in the most critical parts of their operations, where the demands are greatest, without compromising security or control.”
The launch is significant for industries requiring dependable connectivity, yet like all technology solutions, challenges exist. The primary concern remains the cost of widespread deployment and adoption of 5G SA technology. Furthermore, the transition from traditional connectivity solutions to advanced 5G may pose integration challenges for some industries.
Nevertheless, the introduction of Telia Critical IoT Connectivity marks a crucial step forward in telecommunications innovation. It represents progress in enhancing operational efficiency and security across numerous sectors in Sweden. As the telecommunications industry evolves, such advancements promise to reshape not only the economic landscape but also the technological potential for various industries.
