Grid Telecom of Greece and Tamares Telecom of Israel have announced a strategic alliance to establish open-access cable landing infrastructure in Cyprus. This partnership marks a significant milestone in enhancing regional digital infrastructure and promoting sustainable data-driven economic growth.
The joint venture will utilize the Cable Landing Station owned by Tamares Telecom Cyprus on the western coast of Cyprus. This station will serve as a critical interconnectivity node, providing carrier and hosting facilities for international subsea optical fiber cable systems from Europe and the Middle East. It will connect Cyprus with Greece, Israel, Egypt, and other key destinations.
Grid Telecom and Tamares Telecom, through their subsidiary, will offer state-of-the-art infrastructure for secure subsea cable landings. This includes housing power feeding and subsea line terminating equipment, as well as essential interconnection and peering equipment for optical, Ethernet, and IP data traffic.
Leveraging the strategic location of Cyprus, this partnership aims to create a carrier-neutral open-access hub. The hub will feature interconnection data center facilities with alternative low-latency paths to major destinations in Greece, Europe, the Balkans, Turkey, Egypt, North Africa, Israel, and the Arabian Peninsula.
According to Ori Yogev, Chairman of Aluma Infrastructure Fund, “Tamares Telecom is continuously developing and extending its national and international infrastructure. Our collaboration with Grid Telecom and IPTO to acquire a state-of-the-art Cable Landing Station in Cyprus, in parallel with our collaboration to build and operate the ANDROMEDA fiber cable system, will bring security and add value to our reach in Europe and the Middle East.”
Manos Manousakis, Chairman and CEO of IPTO, emphasized the geopolitical significance of the partnership, stating, “IPTO is building infrastructure for tomorrow’s electricity and telecommunications backbone networks throughout Greece and beyond… The strategic partnership between Grid Telecom and Tamares Telecom will create a combined landing and interconnection solution with leading edge connectivity and international reach.”
This initiative will streamline the permitting process and construction for new subsea fiber cable systems, providing a rich telecommunications ecosystem. In addition, it will allow direct cross-connection with other cable systems, backhaul carriers, and digital platforms within the Tamares Telecom Cyprus Cable Landing Station.
