Ericsson has joined the Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)-focused industry advocacy group, Mobile Satellite Services Association (MSSA). The group is dedicated to utilizing satellite spectrum for direct-to-cellular and IoT communications.

Non-Terrestrial Networks provide two main approaches for direct-to-cellular (D2C). Satellite firms can collaborate with mobile network operators, leasing terrestrial spectrum. This strategy is evident in partnerships like T-Mobile US with Starlink, and AT&T and Verizon with AST SpaceMobile. Alternatively, spectrum allocated for mobile satellite services (MSS) can be utilized.

The MSSA, established in February, supports an ecosystem using L- and S-band spectrum. These bands are suitable for integration into various mobile devices. MSSA comprises mainly MSS spectrum holders, including Viasat and Ligado Networks.

Freddie Södergren, head of technology and strategy at Ericsson’s Business Area Networks, expressed enthusiasm: “Through MSSA, Ericsson is keen to advance the goal of ubiquitous connectivity through the integration of terrestrial and space-based networks. Integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with land-based cellular networks has the potential to enhance mobile coverage and reliable connections globally.”

Mark Dankberg, board chairman of MSSA and CEO of Viasat, added, “MSSA is excited to add Ericsson to our growing membership roster and further advance our goal of delivering an affordable, seamless user experience through the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks. Our forum for collaborative development on technical standards and best practices grows with every new member, strengthening our ability to support the emerging D2D ecosystem.”

The integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks aims to offer enhanced mobile coverage globally. Its potential rests in affordable, seamless connectivity, bridging mobile and satellite communications. With Ericsson joining MSSA, the collaboration aims to strengthen efforts toward a robust and global communication framework.
