AST SpaceMobile has achieved a significant milestone by securing a U.S. government contract, allowing it to vie for prototype demonstration projects. The contract falls under the U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA)’s Hybrid Acquisition for Proliferated Low-earth Orbit (HALO) program. This initiative seeks to fast-track the development and deployment of advanced space technologies, aiming to introduce competition, stimulate innovation, and swiftly deliver advanced capabilities to the Department of Defense (DoD).
This contract positions AST SpaceMobile as a direct contender for prototype orders. It offers a platform for the company to demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of its satellite technology for government applications. The company boasts that its five BlueBird satellites are among the largest communication arrays ever deployed commercially in low Earth orbit. These satellites support both communication and non-communication applications.
Several other companies, including Airbus U.S. Space & Defense and LeoStella LLC, are also participating in the HALO program. The SDA stated that the future prototype orders would prioritize rapid, end-to-end mission demonstrations, launching two identical satellites within 12-18 months after the award. The initial orders focus on reducing risks and demonstrating the feasibility of proliferation for tactical data links and optical communication missions. SDA director Derek Tournear remarked, “We believe HALO will also increase the pool of performers capable of bidding on future SDA programs, including participation in layers of future tranches.”
Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer and head of government business at AST SpaceMobile, conveyed that the contract “validates [the company’s] commitment to developing innovative solutions for national security space needs.” He highlighted the potential of AST’s space-based cellular broadband technology to enhance SDA’s efforts in a reliable and secure manner.
Earlier this year, AST SpaceMobile forged a strategic partnership with Verizon, involving an investment of $100 million, including a $35 million loan and $65 million in commercial prepayments. This collaboration grants AST access to Verizon’s 850 MHz spectrum to deliver services, complementing a similar alliance with AT&T to cover the continental United States geographically.
