Nvidia has entered a significant supply agreement with Corning, potentially involving a $3.2 billion equity stake. This strategic partnership aims to significantly boost U.S. optical fiber manufacturing capabilities to meet the escalating demand from AI infrastructure projects.
Under this agreement, both companies plan a major expansion of manufacturing operations. Corning will enhance its optical fiber and cabling production tenfold while increasing fiber capacity by 50% through new facilities in North Carolina and Texas. This move will add 3,000 jobs and underscores Corning’s leadership in optical fiber technology.
The collaboration targets the passive optical fiber essential for interconnecting AI clusters. This is crucial for scaling up NVIDIA’s GPU networking systems, designed for AI “factories.” The focus is on reducing reliance on traditional copper connections and enhancing speed and performance with advanced fiber optics, a field wherein Corning has decades of innovation history.
Complementing its efforts, Nvidia has also invested $4 billion in active photonics stocks with Lumentum and Coherent. These agreements focus on the lasers and optical technologies required for intracompany communications and data-center interconnect networks.
