Deutsche Telekom Expands 5G Network, Enhances User Experience

Deutsche Telekom has advanced its 5G outreach by rolling out 81 new mobile sites and enhancing the capacity of 548 existing facilities in April. This expansion is part of their ambitious ultra-capacity network strategy aimed at broadening connectivity in various German states, including Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Bavaria. As a result, Deutsche Telekom now covers 99% of German households with 5G and is nearly nationwide with 4G.

A vital aspect of this upgrade involves the discontinuation of Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) in the 2.1 GHz frequency band. By reallocating this spectrum solely for 5G services, the operator enhances network capacity and user experience stability. DSS technology had previously allowed both LTE and 5G traffic to share frequencies dynamically. This shift signifies a step towards a 5G-centric approach, as emphasized by Alexander Jenbar, the company’s Chief Technology Officer.

Additionally, customers using the MagentaZuhause Hybrid service will see improved connection speeds. This service merges fixed-line and mobile network bandwidth, offering enhanced coverage in areas where fixed broadband options are limited. Even without fiber, MagentaZuhause Hybrid XXL customers can achieve downloads up to 500 Mbps and uploads up to 50 Mbps. In many regions, users with basic fixed-line options of 16 or 50 Mbps can enjoy speeds up to 100 Mbps, thanks to hybrid connectivity.

The expansion is a part of Deutsche Telekom’s overarching ultra-capacity network initiative, with plans to double the network’s overall capacity. As the rollout progresses, most mobile sites will harness low-band spectrum—such as 700, 800, and 900 MHz frequencies—to improve coverage, including indoors. To enhance speed and lower latency, mid-band spectrum, like the 1.5, 1.8, and 2.1 GHz frequencies, will be deployed across numerous locations.

Moreover, the deployment strategy includes expanding fiber connectivity to mobile sites and upgrading network components to improve efficiency and minimize power consumption. The company continues to highlight the potency of 5G antennas on the 3.6 GHz frequency, connected nearly entirely through high-speed 10 Gbps fiber optics, catering to densely populated areas with exceptional download speeds and mobile coverage.
