BT recently became the first UK company to join Anthropic’s Project Glasswing. This defensive alliance includes critical infrastructure providers worldwide. The partnership allows BT access to Anthropic’s advanced AI model, Claude Mythos Preview. Notably, this AI model has identified long-standing vulnerabilities in seemingly secure systems, shaking the global cybersecurity community.

Project Glasswing, initiated in April, aims to strengthen critical national infrastructure security by identifying and eliminating systemic vulnerabilities. The project focuses on using cutting-edge AI for defensive purposes, addressing the growing threat of AI-driven cyber-attacks. Anthropic emphasizes the urgency, noting, “AI models can now surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding software vulnerabilities.”

The initiative launched with partners such as Amazon Web Services, Apple, Google, Microsoft, CrowdStrike, NVIDIA, Palo Alto Networks, and the Linux Foundation, among others. For BT, joining this coalition underscores its commitment to securing the UK’s national infrastructure against evolving cyber threats.

Jon James, Chief Executive Officer of BT Business, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “AI is changing cybersecurity fast, and businesses need trusted partners who can help them stay one step ahead. By joining Project Glasswing, BT will strengthen its own cybersecurity capability to protect our networks, our customers, and the wider UK.”

This move by BT marks a proactive step in leveraging AI for bolstering cybersecurity. The ever-increasing sophistication of AI in cybercrime necessitates such collaborative defenses. As AI technology advances, the potential consequences for economies, public safety, and national security could be severe.

For telecommunications professionals and enthusiasts, BT’s engagement with Project Glasswing could signify a broader trend of utilizing AI technology for security purposes. As technologies like AI evolve, they present both unprecedented challenges and opportunities for innovative solutions.

The partnership with Anthropic aligns with a growing recognition of AI’s dual role as both a threat and a tool in cybersecurity. By leveraging AI’s capabilities for defensive purposes, organizations aim to stay ahead in the cybersecurity landscape. Project Glasswing represents a significant move towards harnessing AI potential in safeguarding critical infrastructure.
