Vodafone has opened a new Global Cyber Centre in Lisbon, Portugal. The move strengthens its worldwide security operations as attacks grow faster and more complex.
The Lisbon centre will support Vodafone’s networks, systems, and customers across global markets. It will focus on preventing, detecting, and responding to cyber threats. For telecom operators, this function has become critical infrastructure.
Telecom networks now carry voice, data, payments, identity, and enterprise services. A security failure can affect millions of users within minutes. This makes strong monitoring and fast response essential for any global operator.
The new centre will join Vodafone’s existing cybersecurity hubs. These are located in the UK, Germany, Romania, and India. Together, they form a wider defence model across regions and time zones.
Vodafone said the Lisbon site will initially create around 40 specialist roles. Recruitment has already started and will continue through the year. The company wants experts in cybersecurity, engineering, emerging technologies, and digital transformation.
At the same time, Vodafone plans to support internal staff development. Existing employees may move into security roles through training and re-skilling programmes. This approach could help address the industry’s shortage of cyber talent.
Artificial intelligence will also play a central role at the centre. Vodafone expects AI-based tools to help detect unusual activity faster. These tools can scan large volumes of network data in real time.
However, AI also needs careful control. Automated systems can raise false alarms or miss subtle attacks. Operators must combine machine intelligence with experienced security teams.
Portugal offers Vodafone a strong base for this investment. The country has a growing technology sector and active university talent pools. Lisbon also gives the group another European location for specialist operations.

For enterprise customers, the announcement signals a deeper focus on service resilience. Secure networks are now a business requirement, not an optional layer.
Still, investment must translate into measurable protection. Vodafone will need strong processes, skilled analysts, and clear global coordination. The Lisbon centre gives it another platform to meet that challenge.
