SpaceX Targets Mobile Market with Starlink Hybrid Network

SpaceX is preparing a bold shift in mobile connectivity.

The company says Starlink will expand beyond satellite broadband. It now plans a hybrid mobile network using satellites and terrestrial small cells. These small cells could sit on existing Starlink ground equipment.

The move targets the US mobile market directly. That means tougher pressure on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. SpaceX believes it can reduce dead zones and offer stronger coverage.

The company plans next-generation direct-to-cell satellites in 2027. A commercial service could follow by late 2027. Direct-to-cell, or D2D, connects normal devices through satellites without special hardware.

SpaceX also points to a larger opportunity than smartphones. It expects connected cars, robots, and outdoor AI systems to drive demand. These machines may need constant data links across wide areas.

Elon Musk framed that demand as a major internet shift. He said: “Really, I think Starlink is the only thing that can actually service that bandwidth.” He also added: “This is a big deal.”

The plan gained strength after SpaceX acquired 65 MHz of AWS 3/4 spectrum from EchoStar. That gives Starlink far more mobile capacity than current partner-based arrangements. The company says this could improve service dramatically by 2027.

Gwyn Shotwell confirmed the planned launch window. She said: “We will start providing service [by the] end of next year.” She also said: “It gives a massive increase in capability.”

However, the ground network plan raises hard questions. Small cells need power, backhaul, placement rights, and careful planning. Existing Starlink dish locations may not match mobile coverage needs.

Analyst Dimitris Mavrakis expressed strong doubt. He wrote: “Elon Musk is nuts if he thinks 5G small cells with Starlink backhaul can offer better (and cheaper) service than AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.”

That concern reflects past telecom experience. Femtocells have helped inside homes and small sites. Yet they have not replaced nationwide macro networks at scale.

Still, the architecture could help in underserved areas. Rural markets, transport corridors, and remote industrial sites may benefit first. Satellite support can also improve emergency resilience.

Financially, SpaceX continues to grow fast. Second-quarter revenue rose 92 percent to $7.8 billion. Starlink generated $4.3 billion, up 66 percent year over year.

Yet spending also surged sharply. Capital expenditure reached about $18.3 billion during the quarter. Much of that went into launches, satellites, and AI compute infrastructure.

For telecom operators, the message is clear. SpaceX no longer wants only partnership roles. It wants a stronger position in mobile access.

The challenge now is execution. Satellite ambition must meet terrestrial engineering reality. If SpaceX solves that balance, US mobile competition could change quickly.
