Xiaomi unveils new flagship smartphones
The Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has introduced its new flagship smartphones, the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro, which will go on sale in China from December 31st. The global launch of the Xiaomi 12 is expected to follow in early 2022. According to the company’s press release, the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro are powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, and feature industry-leading DisplayMate A+ OLED displays and powerful imaging capabilities. During the presentation, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun indicated that the new smartphone would be a direct competitor to the iPhone 13.

Telefónica acquires Ericsson 5G equipment to replace Huawei
Telefónica, Spain’s leading telecommunications group, has bought 5G network equipment from the Swedish manufacturer Ericsson to replace some Huawei gear that it has deployed in Spain. According to the local newspaper Expansion, Telefónica had initially rolled out equipment made by China’s Huawei before looking for alternate suppliers for its 5G network. The replacement of this network equipment is part of Telefónica’s strategy announced in 2019 that aims to diversify its suppliers. In addition, the US government had been urging some of its key allies to remove and replace 5G kits developed by Chinese companies due to security concerns.

The FCC wins legal challenge to unlicensed Wi-Fi in 6 GHz band
The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has upheld the FCC’s plan to open up 1,200 MHz of spectrum in the 6 GHz band for unlicensed Wi-Fi services. Back in April 2020, the US agency approved the spectrum change, but faced a legal challenge from telecom operators concerned about potential interference with their own services. AT&T argued against the FCC’s decision, saying that the commission failed to identify possible interference with a huge number of microwave links crucial for maintaining the network infrastructure.

American Tower buys CoreSite Realty Corporation
American Tower, the world’s largest owner of wireless infrastructure with more than 170,000 sites, has finalized its acquisition of CoreSite Realty Corporation following the completion of its previously announced tender offer for all of CoreSite’s outstanding shares of common stock. Tom Bartlett, American Tower’s Chief Executive Officer, stated, “As 5G deployments and wireless and wireline convergence accelerate, we expect to leverage CoreSite’s highly interconnected data center facilities and critical cloud on-ramps to drive strong, consistent, recurring growth while enhancing the value of our existing tower real estate through emerging edge compute opportunities.”
