KPN Acquires Youfone: Impact on Dutch Telecom Market and MVNO Landscape

This week, KPN announced its acquisition of local Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Youfone for approximately €200 million. With around 540,000 customers, Youfone is the third-largest MVNO in the Netherlands, and 10% of its base are fixed broadband subscribers.

As Youfone already provides mobile services using KPN’s network, the transition should be fairly smooth, and KPN plans to preserve the Youfone mobile brand. KPN’s current subscriber pool includes over 3.5 million mobile customers and almost 3 million mobile subscribers. With the addition of Youfone’s customer base, KPN is poised to overtake T-Mobile Netherlands and become the largest mobile operator in the country, based on retail customer data reported recently. However, the agreement is still subject to regulatory approval.

In related news, KPN has acquired Primevest’s Dutch fiber assets, expanding its fiber coverage by around 127,000 premises mainly located in Rotterdam, The Hague, and Eindhoven. The company has set a goal to cover 80% of the Netherlands with full fiber by 2026, and its fiber network already spans over four million buildings.
