Unpacking Nokia’s Network as a Code: Benefits and Challenges

The Nokia‘s Network as a Code, launched in September, is aimed at aiding operators to capitalize on their 5G network resources. This platform offers application developers greater access to network information and function via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and Software Development Kits (SDK). Essentially, it empowers developers to create new applications for final users.

As Reza Rahnama, Managing Director of Mobile Networks at BT Group, highlighted, 5G networks, with their inherent software-based architecture, offer innovative capabilities that were inconceivable just a few years ago. These advanced features, such as improved network quality on demand can greatly benefit both businesses and consumers.

Working with Nokia and its innovative platform, Mr. Rahnama continued, will help better tap into these remarkable capabilities inherent in their 5G network. Further reinforcing the value of the move is Shkumbin Hamiti, Head of Network Monetization Platform, Cloud and Network Services, at Nokia. According to him, BT Group is playing a significant role in helping the industry comprehend the benefits of opening telecom networks to application developers.

The goal of improved developer access to network functions via open APIs is one Nokia is also pursuing through a recent partnership with Dish in the USA. The ecosystem project launched will make it possible for enterprises to build applications using Nokia’s Network as a Code and advanced mobile and 5G network capabilities.

The Telecoms sector has started to seriously consider the value of giving developers greater access to network functions via open APIs. This fact was evident at the Mobile World Congress, where one of the main highlights was the launch of the GSMA’s Open Gateway Project. A partnership between 21 mobile operators, the project seeks to expose their 5G networks to developers through open APIs.
