Sparkle and Turkcell are collaborating to enhance Europe-Mediterranean internet connectivity with a new subsea cable. This strategic partnership, formalized at this year’s MWC Barcelona, aims to establish a 4,000 km cable connecting Turkey’s Izmir to Greece’s Chania, and extending to Milan, Italy.

The cable design supports over 25 terabits per second per fiber pair, enhancing data transmission capacity and speed significantly. Sparkle’s global experience in subsea systems complements Turkcell’s strong Turkish market presence, aiming to fulfill the growing bandwidth demands and internet speed expectations.

According to Enrico Bagnasco, CEO of Sparkle, this collaboration offers a unique low-latency path and introduces a new digital corridor between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. It will further align with their GreenMed project, stimulating digital growth across regions.

For Dr. Ali Taha Koç, CEO of Turkcell, the project addresses the requirement for geographical redundancy. It provides additional paths if traditional routes are disrupted, ensuring continuity in international data connections. The robust option offered by this project appeals to hyperscalers and content providers needing reliable connectivity.

This initiative not only bolsters the stability of global data infrastructure amid rising data traffic but also strengthens connections between the East and the West. The project highlights efforts to meet global demands for seamless and high-capacity internet access.
