In a significant move to revolutionize maritime logistics, Danish shipping giant Maersk is advancing its technological infrastructure with the deployment of a comprehensive private network across its fleet. Titled ‘OneWireless’, this LTE connectivity platform is set to be installed on 450 vessels, aiming to optimize cargo tracking and management.
The transition to this new system marks a pivotal modernization from the company’s existing 2G and IoT setup. Collaborations with industry leaders such as Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa have been assembled to achieve this upgrade. These key partners each contribute distinct technological elements to this massive overhauling project.
The OneWireless network promises to unify various wireless technologies, including NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE, while also providing future-ready pathways to 5G. This strategic development enables Maersk to offer its clients reliable monitoring at sea, in port, and on land through BYOIoT solutions adhering to standardized protocols.
Installation of the system involves scheduled port visits for hardware integration, and the rollout is expected to finish by Q1 2026. The benefits of the system extend into diverse areas such as asset tracking, environmental monitoring, and quality control. In turn, these features will ultimately enhance operational efficiency and add value for customers.
Kjeld Dittmann, leading the vessel and cargo connectivity initiative at Maersk, highlighted the impact of the upgrade. He equated it with the monumental shift from 2G to 4G experienced by consumers, emphasizing its transformative potential for maritime operations.
Onomondo, pivotal in setting up the private LTE environment, claims authorship of the private LTE core network. This infrastructure ensures uninterrupted operation even without satellite connectivity, negating traditional maritime communication challenges. The flexibility of the system allows devices to switch seamlessly between private LTE and public networks without manual changes. Onomondo’s global reach through its MVNO agreements further strengthens the offering.
