Intelsat has deepened its partnership with Solomon Telekom Company Limited (STCL) to enhance internet connectivity across the Solomon Islands using its high-capacity satellite, Horizons 3e. This extended agreement focuses on managed services and includes the active oversight of STCL’s satellite network by Intelsat. The initiative features real-time monitoring and remote support for cellular backhaul operations.
As a result of this collaboration, the Solomon Islands are witnessing improved call quality and higher data usage, even in distant regions that previously struggled with connectivity. These upgrades now bring rural areas closer to the digital standards experienced in urban centers.
STCL CEO Christina Lasaqa highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating that the launch of 4G mobile services in the outer islands is a transformative step. “We’re bringing mobile broadband and digital services like e-finance to communities that were previously underserved,” she said, underscoring the company’s commitment to making fast internet available to all Solomon Islanders.
Nigel Stitt, Intelsat’s senior sales director for Asia Pacific, emphasized their focus on empowering remote communities with reliable broadband through mobile devices. He noted that the company’s customized solutions and fast deployment are central to supporting both STCL and the broader Pacific region.
Separately, Intelsat has secured approval from the Indian government to offer satellite services directly to broadcast media companies within the country. The authorization enables Intelsat to deliver expanded C-band coverage using four geostationary satellites, enhancing broadcast content distribution across India.
In another development, Intelsat recently partnered with Cubic3 to test a new platform that blends terrestrial and satellite networks. This trial aimed to demonstrate seamless connectivity for vehicles and devices across different network types, helping to eliminate the need for separate systems and accounts when switching between land-based and satellite coverage.
