Qualcomm Names Buniac to Drive Snapdragon AI Expansion

Qualcomm has named Sergio Buniac as executive vice president and group general manager of Mobile, Compute and Personal AI. He starts on 2 September and reports to president and CEO Cristiano Amon.

The appointment places Buniac in charge of a broad device portfolio. It includes smartphones, personal computers, smart wearables and XR products. XR covers extended reality devices, including virtual and augmented reality headsets.

Buniac joins after more than three decades at Motorola. During that time, he held senior roles across strategy, product, sales, marketing, operations and supply chain. That mix gives Qualcomm a leader with deep consumer device experience.

Amon said: “Sergio is a proven business leader with more than 30 years of experience in the mobile industry. “He has a strong record of driving innovation, transforming and growing businesses, and leading through significant industry transitions.”

The timing matters for Qualcomm. The company wants to push Snapdragon platforms beyond smartphones. It has already targeted Windows PCs, wearables and connected devices. It now wants artificial intelligence to become a core user experience.

Amon added: “Sergio also brings expertise in building compelling consumer devices from design to commercialisation, globally.”

For telecoms and device markets, the move signals a sharper focus on personal computing. Qualcomm wants chips that power phones, laptops and wearables with similar software experiences. That could help device makers reduce fragmentation across product lines.

At the same time, this strategy brings pressure. The PC market remains highly competitive. Established silicon vendors still command strong developer support. Qualcomm must convince manufacturers, operators and enterprise buyers that its platforms can scale.

The AI angle also raises expectations. On-device AI can reduce cloud dependence and improve response times. It can also support privacy by processing more data locally. For users, that may mean smarter assistants, better cameras and longer battery life.

However, agentic AI remains a developing area. These systems can act with more independence than standard assistants. That creates new questions around safety, control and reliability. Device makers must balance automation with clear user oversight.

Overall, Buniac’s appointment strengthens Qualcomm’s consumer device leadership. It also shows how mobile, compute and AI markets now overlap. For telecoms players, that convergence could shape future devices, services and edge applications.
