Netmore LoRaWAN Powers Aarhus Vand Smart Meter Rollout

Aarhus Vand has selected Netmore for a major smart water meter deployment in Denmark. The project will connect about 69,000 water meters across Aarhus Municipality.

The utility will use Netmore’s carrier-grade LoRaWAN® network with digital metering technology from Kamstrup. LoRaWAN supports low-power devices that send small data packets over long distances.

The rollout starts in Tranbjerg after a pilot with about 1,000 homes. During that test, Aarhus Vand validated meter communication with its systems. The full programme will continue through 2030.

For residents, the change removes manual meter readings. It also gives online access to water usage data. That can help households spot waste and adjust daily habits.

For the utility, the network adds earlier warning signs for abnormal use. It may help detect leaks, faulty heat exchangers, or damaged infrastructure. These issues often raise bills and waste water if found late.

However, smart metering depends heavily on reliable coverage. Water meters often sit in difficult locations. Basements, pits, and dense urban areas can challenge radio signals. Netmore will therefore deploy and manage a dense network for the project.

This is an important step in giving our customers real visibility into their water consumption and helping us identify issues before they become costly problems.”

The project also shows growing momentum for Massive IoT in utility networks. These deployments connect large numbers of sensors with modest data needs. They require strong planning, but they can improve operations for years.

Kamstrup also highlighted the importance of matching meters with dependable connectivity. Without timely reads, smart meters lose much of their value. Data quality becomes as important as the sensor itself.

Deployment partner Eltel will install the meters area by area. Customers will receive notifications when remote readings become active in their area.
