Deutsche Telekom has upgraded mobile coverage at Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s BayArena before the new Bundesliga season.
The project targets one familiar stadium problem. Thousands of fans try to upload, stream, message, and browse at once. That demand often overwhelms mobile networks during key match moments.
The operator has installed 41 new antennas above the stadium stands. It also divided coverage into 14 separate mobile sectors. This design helps distribute traffic more evenly across the 30,000-capacity venue.
Fifteen antennas serve the lower tier. Another 26 antennas cover the upper tier. The network supports 4G LTE and 5G services across 800MHz to 3,600MHz frequencies.
This broad frequency range matters for stadium environments. Lower bands help penetrate difficult areas. Higher bands add capacity where crowds generate heavy data demand.
Work began immediately after the last season ended. Engineers installed five kilometres of high-frequency cable. They also added cable trays, distribution boxes, and four operations rooms.
The investment shows how stadium connectivity has become mission-critical. Fans now expect mobile performance to match the live event itself. A goal, replay, or controversy can trigger instant traffic spikes.
Mathias Poeten, responsible for mobile network expansion at Deutsche Telekom, said: “When the BayArena is rocking, the network has to deliver – instantly. In the first ten seconds after a goal, it’s decided whether a fan can send their video or is staring at the loading bar. A stable, fast network is now an essential part of the stadium experience.
“That’s why we’re creating the necessary capacity at the BayArena so that tens of thousands of fans can be online quickly and reliably at the same time.”
The upgrade does not stop inside the main bowl. Deutsche Telekom also deployed three microcells along busy routes near the stadium. These small mobile sites add capacity during arrival and departure peaks.
That outside coverage can prove just as important. Fans use maps, tickets, transport apps, and messaging while moving around. Congestion often starts before kick-off and continues after full time.
The operator also improved coverage in changing rooms and other stadium areas. This supports staff, media teams, players, and club operations. Modern sports venues now depend on connectivity far beyond fan browsing.
However, deployments like this require careful planning. Stadiums present dense crowds, complex structures, and strict installation windows. Operators must balance capacity, cost, visual impact, and reliability.
Even so, the BayArena project highlights a wider shift in telecoms. Mobile networks are becoming part of the matchday infrastructure. For operators, stadiums offer a high-profile testbed for dense urban connectivity.
