More than 100 technology companies have issued a joint warning on AI-driven cyber threats. The signatories include OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, Oracle, Perplexity and Google.
Their message is clear. Organisations must strengthen defences before attackers gain more speed and scale. The warning should resonate across telecoms, cloud, enterprise IT and public services.
“We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defences,” the open letter said.
The concern centres on more capable AI models. Attackers could use them to find weak systems faster. They could also automate scanning, phishing and exploitation at scale.
For telecoms teams, this is not an abstract risk. Networks now support hospitals, emergency services, transport systems and industrial sites. Many also carry voice, messaging and VoIP traffic for essential operations.
The letter highlights familiar weaknesses. These include outdated software, poor settings, weak passwords and excessive user permissions. Many organisations also carry technical debt from years of delayed upgrades.
That creates an awkward reality for security teams. AI may increase attack speed. Yet it can also help defenders move faster.
Security teams can use AI tools to review code. They can detect unusual behaviour across networks. They can also prioritise urgent patches more effectively. For smaller organisations, this could reduce pressure on limited security staff.
However, tools alone will not solve the problem. Companies still need clear ownership, funding and disciplined operations. They must test whether fixes work. They must also build stronger protection into new systems from the start.
The letter also calls for a wider global response. “Cyber capabilities are advancing worldwide, and that can be a net positive: no single company should control the future. It also means a global response is necessary, requiring new partnerships to raise security standards and find new solutions to emerging cyber threats,” the letter added.
This point matters for telecom operators and service providers. Their platforms often connect many smaller businesses. A weak customer, supplier or software partner can expose a wider ecosystem.
The signatories want leading AI developers to provide practical help. That includes funding, training and hands-on support. The letter places special focus on critical infrastructure operators with limited budgets.
“Each of us can reduce risk now. All organisations, cybersecurity companies, technology partners, governments, and AI frontier companies have an important role: accelerate defenders’ priorities with tools, funding, and hands-on support, especially for critical infrastructure organisations with limited budgets.”
The warning lands as telecoms embraces automation, cloud-native platforms and software-led networks. These changes bring flexibility and efficiency. They also expand the attack surface.
For IT and telecom leaders, the next step is practical. Find the weakest systems first. Fix the most dangerous gaps. Then verify every improvement with regular testing.
