VodafoneThree has delivered a sharp warning on UK mobile infrastructure.
The operator says the UK could lose ground in the global AI race. Its concern is simple. AI services need strong, fast, and reliable networks. Without them, users may face slower services and more frequent congestion.
According to The Guardian, AI investment and data centre spending continue to rise. Yet network upgrades have not received the same attention. This imbalance could create pressure across mobile and fixed telecoms networks.
Andrea Donà, networks director at VodafoneThree, said current UK mobile quality already causes concern. He warned that mass AI adoption could expose deeper weaknesses.
“If with the technology and services we use today [networks] are sub-optimal, imagine when you add mass AI usage and other associated activities,”
“I would go further. I am embarrassed today at the level of quality of our network[s]. The UK is worthy of what EE, O2 and VodafoneThree can offer, but we need reform.”
His comments reflect a wider industry concern. AI tools generate and move large amounts of data. Voice assistants, video tools, analytics platforms, and enterprise automation all rely on connectivity. If usage grows quickly, networks must absorb heavier traffic every day.
Donà compared future AI demand with today’s network strain at large events. Stadiums, concerts, and festivals often push mobile sites to their limits. Users may see slower browsing, failed uploads, or delayed messaging.
“What we see now only with a mass aggregation of people is a proxy, an indication of the things that will come. That [one-off] experience will be constant because of the additional capacity [consumers] will need in an AI world,” he said.
For operators, the warning strengthens the case for faster reform and investment. Better planning rules could accelerate site deployments. More spectrum access could also improve capacity. In addition, modernised backhaul would help move traffic from cell sites faster.
However, the challenge reaches beyond mobile operators. Government, regulators, landlords, and local authorities all influence rollout speed. Network upgrades often face delays due to planning rules, access disputes, and high deployment costs.
For customers, stronger networks would support richer digital services. Businesses could use AI tools with fewer service interruptions. Consumers could benefit from better mobile video, cloud apps, and real-time translation.
Still, higher investment must find a business case. Operators already face pressure on margins. Many customers expect more data without much higher pricing. That makes funding major upgrades difficult without policy support.
The debate also affects 5G. The technology offers higher capacity and lower delay than older networks. Yet performance depends on coverage, site density, and strong fibre connections. AI could make those foundations more important than ever.
VodafoneThree’s message is direct. AI ambition needs telecoms ambition. Data centres may power intelligence, but networks deliver it to users. Without stronger infrastructure, the UK could build advanced services on weak foundations.
