Liberty Global Taps Sierra for European AI Agents

Liberty Global has signed a three-year agreement with Sierra, a conversational AI specialist. The group wants to expand customer-facing automation across its European operations.

The deal gives Liberty Global companies a shared platform for AI agents. These agents can talk with customers through chat, voice, and messaging. They use natural language, so customers can ask questions in everyday terms.

The rollout targets around 80 million fixed and mobile connections across Europe. Liberty Global has already started a phased deployment. Each market and brand will choose its own customer service priorities.

This local approach matters. Telecom customers often need support in different languages and channels. They also expect answers that reflect local products, billing rules, and network conditions.

Liberty Global Chairman and CEO Mike Fries, said: “Sierra has built a game-changing platform that we are excited to deploy across our footprint.

“By combining Sierra’s technology and deployment expertise with the deep knowledge of our local teams, we will deliver better customer experience across our group by making customer journeys simpler, faster and more effective.”

The partnership reflects a wider telecom shift toward AI-led service operations. Operators face rising support volumes and stronger customer expectations. Faster answers can reduce call centre pressure and improve digital engagement.

For engineers and IT teams, the attraction is clear. AI agents can handle repeated tasks at scale. They can guide users through billing, appointments, package changes, or service checks.

At the same time, the model demands careful governance. Telecoms handle sensitive customer data every day. AI systems must follow strict rules for privacy, security, and accuracy.

Poorly trained agents can also create frustration. Customers still need human support for complex or emotional cases. Operators must balance automation with clear escalation paths.

Sierra CEO and Co-Founder, Bret Taylor, said: “We’re excited to partner with Liberty Global – a pioneer in applied AI and a telecommunications leader with significant scale, expertise and a deep understanding of European customers.

“This partnership is a strong vote of confidence in Sierra’s ability to improve customer experiences, reduce the burden on support teams and grow revenue. We look forward to working with Mike and the team as we roll out agents across Liberty Global’s companies.”

The agreement also builds on Liberty Global’s broader AI strategy. The company has already pursued major cloud and automation partnerships. Its latest move shows stronger confidence in customer-facing AI.

For the telecom sector, this deal will be closely watched. Successful deployment could encourage more operators to centralise AI frameworks. Yet local execution will decide the real customer impact.

If Liberty Global gets that balance right, AI may become more than a support tool. It could become a core layer of future telecom customer experience.
