Openreach Taps Ciena for Nationwide 800G Optical Upgrade

Openreach is preparing a major capacity boost across its UK optical network. The company will launch national 800G services using Ciena technology. It marks its first nationwide move into this speed tier.

The upgrade uses Ciena’s Waveserver platform and WaveLogic 6 1.6Tb/s technology. Openreach will place the service inside its Optical Spectrum Extended Access portfolio. This portfolio supports high-capacity optical links for wholesale customers.

The rollout targets organisations moving large data volumes between key locations. These include data centres, subsea cable landing stations and core network sites. Such routes now carry more traffic from cloud, streaming, enterprise systems and artificial intelligence workloads.

Openreach plans to carry 400G and 800G customer traffic over dedicated 1.6Tb/s wavelengths. In simple terms, each wavelength acts like a high-speed lane. It moves data across fibre without sharing capacity with unrelated traffic.

Each 2RU chassis can support up to 32 400G services. That density helps operators add capacity without using excessive rack space. It also gives wholesale customers a clearer upgrade path as demand rises.

The move arrives as UK connectivity needs keep expanding. Data centres require faster links between sites. Private cloud platforms need predictable performance. International subsea cables also need strong onward routes after reaching the UK coast.

However, high-capacity optical upgrades also require careful planning. Operators must align equipment, power, space and service demand. Customers also need applications that can justify such large pipes. Otherwise, capacity may stay underused in some routes.

Even so, the timing looks strategic. AI systems need fast access to large datasets. Critical infrastructure also depends on resilient national backhaul. For wholesale buyers, 800G services can reduce network complexity over busy corridors.

Openreach Director of Products, Nicolas Lemaitre, said: “Demand for fast, reliable connectivity is growing rapidly. This investment shows how Openreach is strengthening its network to support wholesale customers across the UK.

“By using Ciena’s Waveserver and WL6 technology, we’re preparing our services for the next wave of digital growth, including increasing demand from AI applications and Critical National Infrastructure.”

The deployment also gives Openreach room for faster services later. That matters because fibre networks must serve demand for many years. By adopting 1.6Tb/s technology now, Openreach can scale without immediate platform replacement.

For telecom engineers and enterprise network teams, the message is clear. Optical networks remain central to digital growth. Faster mobile, cloud and AI services still depend on strong fibre foundations. Openreach’s national 800G rollout strengthens that foundation across the UK.
