In a significant move to enhance telecommunications capabilities, O2 Telefónica Germany has renewed its partnership with Mavenir, signing a five-year contract to transition its 4G and 5G voice services to Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) technology. This extension reflects a growing trend in the industry focusing on advanced cloud-native solutions.

The collaboration aims to replace the existing virtualized IMS with a more flexible and scalable cloud-native platform across both fixed and mobile networks. This upgrade encompasses the entire customer base, promising improved service quality by supporting Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over New Radio (VoNR).

The cloud-native IMS architecture integrated by Mavenir harnesses stateless microservices and containerization, which facilitates rapid service deployment on either public or private clouds. It is a forward-thinking approach that enables faster adaptation to evolving telecommunications needs.

Matthias Sauder, Director Networks at O2 Telefónica, highlighted the strategic decision, stating, “It was a natural decision to extend our successful technology partnership with Mavenir, which has helped us to deliver our best ever quality of service to our customers and optimise our investment in agile network innovation.” This announcement complements O2 Telefónica’s ‘very good’ rating in the 2025 Mobile Network Test by connect magazine, setting high expectations for future service delivery.

The collaboration exemplifies how embracing cloud technology can propel network evolution, optimizing operations through virtualisation and fostering innovation. Mavenir’s leadership in network functions virtualisation initially spurred O2 Telefónica’s decision, and the partnership now aims to leverage automation and artificial intelligence in further network development.
