Microsoft Retires Teams Live Chat for AI Engagement

Microsoft will retire Teams Live Chat in October, forcing users to move quickly. The decision affects small firms that used the website chat widget. It routed customer messages directly into Teams channels. That made support simple for teams already working inside Teams.

The tool launched in March 2025 for Microsoft 365 customers. Brenna Robinson, then General Manager for Microsoft 365 and Copilot, welcomed it strongly.

Today we’re excited to take that customer experience to a new level with the introduction of live chat in Microsoft Teams, a faster and more engaging way for you to connect with your customers.

However, that confidence faded fast. Microsoft Message Center notice MC1449174 says the company will end the feature by October. Microsoft said it wants to “focus investments on newer customer engagement and communication experiences.”

The retirement follows a very short product cycle. Microsoft renamed the service Customer Connect in April 2026. It also expanded availability worldwide and added 26 languages. The widget gained appointment booking, which suited service-led small businesses.

Yet the rebrand lasted only weeks. New customers lost setup access in early August. Existing deployments work until 5 October. After that, websites will no longer push new chats into Teams. Historical chat records and existing Teams channels should remain available.

For many organisations, the original idea still made sense. Teams Live Chat reduced tool switching for frontline staff. It also gave small businesses a lightweight customer contact channel. They did not need a full contact centre platform.

Still, the model had limits. It focused on simple chat flows. It also tied website conversations closely to Teams. That approach became less aligned with Microsoft’s AI-first direction.

Microsoft now points customers toward Copilot Studio and Dynamics 365. These platforms support richer automation, routing, and customer journey features. Copilot Studio can also build AI agents for common service tasks.

That shift may help larger teams modernise customer engagement. It can reduce repetitive work and improve response quality. However, smaller users may face added complexity. They must review licensing, workflows, and deployment effort.

This move also fits a wider Teams cleanup. Microsoft retired Teams Live Events on 30 June. Together Mode exited on the same day. Whiteboard legacy features will follow in September.

For IT leaders, the next step is clear. Audit all websites for active Teams Live Chat widgets. Notify support teams before the cutoff date. Then test a replacement before customer messages stop flowing.

The wider message is also important. Microsoft is tightening Teams around newer AI-led experiences. Businesses now need closer roadmap monitoring. A useful feature can disappear quickly when strategy changes.
