Virgin Media O2 has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first to deploy 5G standalone small cells in the UK. This cutting-edge technology targets high-traffic zones in Birmingham, enhancing mobile connectivity for both residents and businesses.

Initial reports show promising results with improved mobile internet speeds, hitting up to 300Mbps, thanks to the integration of advanced MIMO technology. This initiative was made possible through a collaboration with Ontix and Alpha Wireless, companies known for expertise in connectivity solutions.

Unlike traditional mobile towers, these small cells have been seamlessly embedded into existing street structures. This not only maintains the aesthetic appeal of cityscapes but also focuses on areas with heavy demand, such as Birmingham’s bustling business and nightlife districts.

This deployment marks an important step for Virgin Media O2, which already operates the UK’s largest small cell network. The strategic use of 5G standalone technology distinguishes this effort, representing a first in the country’s rollout of small cells.

Jeanie York, CTO at Virgin Media O2, expressed enthusiasm about the deployment stating, “Small cells are playing a vital part in our mission to bring reliable mobile coverage to all customers and improve services in the busiest areas.”

The operator’s strategy includes expanding its 5G standalone network, provided to customers at no extra cost, now spanning over 300 towns and cities across Britain. The company reports a 26% increase in mobile data usage among its customers in 2023, emphasizing the necessity of enhanced connectivity.

Chris Hudson, West Midlands 5G Connectivity Director, is pleased with the investment and states, “Fast and reliable connectivity in our region is critical for both residents and businesses. Broad Street and Fleet Street are two of the busiest areas in our brilliant city, and these discreet masts will ensure visitors and residents across the West Midlands enjoy a high-quality connectivity experience.”

This initiative is a part of Virgin Media O2’s extensive network upgrade plan, investing £2 million daily to modernize its mobile infrastructure. This substantial investment is timely, especially as 5G standalone deployments were previously noted to lag behind expectations.
