Lumen Technologies has introduced a new cybersecurity solution called Defender Plus, designed to automatically intercept and neutralize online threats before they reach enterprise networks. Built on Lumen’s own infrastructure and powered by the threat intelligence of Black Lotus Labs, the system aims to tackle a wide range of cyber risks, including bots, phishing attacks, malware, spam, and command-and-control operations.
Unlike conventional firewalls or endpoint protection tools, Defender Plus operates at the edge of the network, identifying and blocking malicious activity before it penetrates an organization’s digital perimeter. In a pilot test with Apex DataCom, the tool reportedly led to a 70-80% drop in security alerts and blocked hundreds of brute-force attacks allegedly launched by a nation-state actor.
During a single week, the tool thwarted hundreds of thousands of threats on Apex DataCom’s high-capacity circuits. Lumen says this edge-level mitigation allowed the company’s IT team to redirect their attention from constant security monitoring to more strategic tasks. Defender Plus integrates with Lumen’s Internet On-Demand service and leverages a continuous stream of threat data from Black Lotus Labs, which tracks more than 2.3 million threats daily and has previously exposed prolonged nation-state cyber campaigns.
According to Martin Nystrom, Vice President of Black Lotus Labs and product security at Lumen, this product gives customers access to the same protective intelligence Lumen uses on its global network. By combining threat visibility with AI-driven decision-making, Defender Plus aims to deliver a proactive and dynamic defense.
Lumen also announced plans to expand the tool’s capabilities to Dedicated Internet Access environments in the future. As cyber threats continue to surge globally, especially against SMEs, the company positions Defender Plus as a critical tool in the modern digital defense arsenal.
