Earlier this week, Verizon and Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced an ambitious collaboration to expand long-haul fiber routes, addressing the massive data demands of AI and generative AI workloads. As artificial intelligence continues to transform technology, robust and scalable network infrastructure has become essential for supporting growing computational needs.
The partnership focuses on building new, high-capacity fiber pathways connecting AWS data centers. Scott Lawrence, Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer at Verizon Business, explained that AI workloads require 10 to 100 times more bandwidth than traditional cloud services, highlighting the need for faster, more reliable connectivity.
Verizon’s AI Connect platform plays a key role in this evolution. By integrating fiber, edge computing, and 5G/mmWave technology, the platform ensures low-latency, high-performance links between cloud cores and AI endpoints – crucial for managing real-time AI model processing and data-intensive applications.
This initiative also aligns with Verizon’s broader infrastructure modernization strategy. Following the $20 billion acquisition of Frontier Communications, Verizon is expanding its fiber footprint to reach more than 25 million premises, with plans to add 650,000 new Fios passings in 2025 and surpass 1 million annually in the following years.
The new fiber capacity will enhance Verizon’s AI Connect capabilities, supporting secure, high-capacity data transport and enabling enterprises to efficiently manage AI-driven workloads. This collaboration strengthens Verizon’s position at the intersection of telecommunications and cloud computing, ensuring readiness for the next wave of AI-powered innovation.
