Telus plans to expand its sovereign AI infrastructure in Canada with a new cluster of AI data centers in British Columbia. This move follows the successful launch and overwhelming demand for Telus’ first sovereign AI facility in Rimouski, Quebec. The initiative is part of the federal Enabling Large-Scale Sovereign AI Data Centers program.

The Rimouski facility, which opened in September 2025, has already reached full capacity. To meet growing domestic and international demand, Telus is working closely with the Canadian government. The expansion in British Columbia includes three new AI-focused facilities, expanding Kamloops’ existing center and establishing two new sites in Vancouver in partnership with Westbank.

These facilities are expected to boast more than 60,000 GPUs and 150 megawatts of capacity by 2032. The Kamloops site will open later this year, while the Vancouver sites will launch in phases until 2029. These sites will leverage high-performance Nvidia GPU technology for AI model training, inference, and deployment tasks.

Furthermore, Telus will prioritize sustainability. The new centers aim to operate on renewable energy supplied by BC Hydro and will incorporate advanced cooling and heat recovery systems, minimizing energy use and integrating with Vancouver’s district heating systems.

The project aligns with Canada’s objective to maintain data governance and high-performance compute capacity within its borders. “This new compute capacity will serve the growing ecosystem of businesses, researchers, start-ups, and government organizations seeking to innovate rapidly and leverage AI capabilities for training models or inference applications,” said Darren Entwistle, President and CEO of Telus.

Entwistle also mentioned a 22% revenue growth in Q1 2026 attributed to their AI initiatives. This success solidifies Telus’ AI-driven strategy aiming for a CAD2 billion revenue target by 2028, spanning across Telus Digital and Telus Business Solutions.
