EE has launched Fast Lane, a premium network slicing service in the UK.
The company says it is the first commercial service of its kind. It serves both mobile customers and businesses. Fast Lane uses a dedicated virtual part of EE’s physical 5G+ network.
In simple terms, network slicing separates traffic into protected lanes. Each lane can support a different service level. Fast Lane gives users a more reliable connection during heavy demand.
That matters at crowded locations. Concerts, stadiums, festivals, and rush-hour stations often overload mobile networks. Users may struggle to stream video, send files, or process card payments.
EE says Fast Lane targets these high-pressure moments. Event vendors could keep payment terminals online. Broadcasters could upload content faster. Fans could share live moments with fewer interruptions.
“Powered by our advanced 5G+ network, Fast Lane gives our customers access to a dedicated 5G+ lane at the busiest times. Whether they’re live streaming a special moment from a sell-out gig or processing mobile payments and ticketing at a festival, Fast Lane helps keep customers connected even when thousands of people around them are trying to connect at the same time,” said Claire Gillies, CEO of BT’s Consumer Division. “This innovation builds on years of investment in EE’s 5G+ network and real-world network slicing trials, marking another milestone for the UK’s best network.”
The launch follows several live trials by BT and EE. These included Belfast Christmas Market, SailGP in Portsmouth, and the BAFTAs. Such trials helped test performance in real public environments.
However, the service introduces a new pricing model for mobile quality. Fast Lane comes with EE’s Full Works Plus plan. That package costs £48 per month, £5 above Full Works.
This creates an important market question. Premium lanes may improve service for paying users. Yet other users may expect the base network to remain strong.
Fast Lane also depends on device and coverage availability. Customers need a compatible 5G+ handset. They also need access to EE’s 5G+ network.
Today, that network reaches around 78% of the UK population. EE aims to reach 99% population coverage by March 2030. Until then, availability will vary by location.
Still, the launch marks a major step for network slicing. Operators have discussed the concept for years. EE now brings it into a retail mobile package.
For telecoms teams, this shift deserves close attention. It shows how operators may package guaranteed performance. It also signals new service models for events, retail, and field operations.
