Telefonica piloting blockchain across 8,000 companies
Telecoms multinational Telefonica has teamed up with the Association of Science and Technology Parks (APTE) to provide approximately 8,000 companies in Spain with access to a secure, decentralised blockchain network. Telefonica plans to launch a three-month pilot project that will encourage companies to develop their own decentralised applications on the blockchain at no extra cost, and will also allow them to experiment with their own digital tokens. Blockchain is being widely adopted in a variety of industries, especially in the field of IoT, where 75 percent of IoT technology users in the US already use blockchain or plan to do so by the end of 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Fold sales figures revealed, and they’re worse than earlier reports
Samsung Electronics sold close to half a million of its Galaxy Fold smartphones last year. Speaking to the Yonhap News Agency at CES 2020, Koh Dong-jin, President and CEO of Samsung’s IT and Mobile Communication division, said that the unit sales numbers worldwide were between 400,000 and 500,000 devices. In addition, the company is expected to launch a second foldable phone with a flexible display in early 2020. The Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 may officially be revealed alongside the Samsung Galaxy S11 range during the upcoming Samsung Unpacked press event on February 11th.

CenturyLink rings up cloud-based voice service for mid-sized businesses
CenturyLink, one of the largest US communications providers for global enterprise customers, has expanded its voice and real-time communication services portfolio with CenturyLink Engage, aimed at SMBs. The company’s new solution offers more than 80 unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) features including advanced call routing, audio, video, instant messaging, file sharing collaboration and access to call centres. CenturyLink Engage also provides customers with an optional online directory listing, customer relationship management (CRM) integration and other add-on tools.

MediaTek reveals Dimensity 800 series 5G SoC for midrange phones
MediaTek has announced the Dimensity 800 5G series system-on-chip (SoC), designed specifically for mid-range and mass market 5G smartphones that are expected to hit the market later this year. TL Lee, Head of MediaTek’s wireless business unit, said, “MediaTek has already launched its flagship 5G smartphone solution, the Dimensity 1000, and with the 800 series 5G chipset family, we are bringing 5G to the mid-tier and mass market.” Dimensity 800’s integrated 5G modem includes two-carrier aggregation, dynamic spectrum sharing, and Voice over New Radio support (the 5G sequel to 4G’s Voice over LTE).

Etisalat unveils new communications service CloudTalk
Etisalat, a multinational Emirati-based telecommunications services provider, has announced the launch of a new cloud-native business unified communication and collaboration service for small and medium businesses (SMBs) and enterprise customers in the UAE. Together with Ribbon Communications, Etisalat will provide its customers with a secure, scalable and cloud-based business communication and collaboration solution. According to the company, CloudTalk is delivered over a carrier-grade cloud private branch exchange (PBX) replacing legacy networks.
