Virgin Media O2 recently announced that its Recycle for Business initiative has successfully processed 45,000 devices since its relaunch in October 2023. This program encourages businesses to trade in unused technology, such as smartphones or routers, which are then refurbished, resold, or recycled. In return, businesses receive cashback or credits, and can also opt to donate to the Good Things Foundation, a charity focusing on digital inclusion in the UK.

The initiative has generated nearly £330,000 for participating businesses. Dana Haidan, Chief Sustainability Officer at VMO2, stated, “We know businesses want simple solutions to help them become more sustainable. That’s why Virgin Media O2 is leading the way in helping companies to reduce their waste, recycle their unwanted tech, and reuse their unwanted device.”

Despite these gains, the challenge of e-waste persists. Research by the operator indicates approximately 11.8 million unused business devices in the UK that could be repurposed. Unfortunately, the UK is one of the top e-waste producers per capita, exceeded only by Norway.

Furthermore, VMO2 has operated a similar initiative for consumer devices since 2009, which has netted users about £350 million and saved 4 million devices from landfills. The combined efforts of the consumer and business programs aim to complete 10 million ‘circular actions’ by year-end, reinforcing the push towards a circular economy.

With significant opportunities still untapped, the initiative’s potential impact is vast. This highlights the crucial role businesses can play in the broader movement toward sustainability, both in reducing waste and in supporting digital inclusion by providing technology access to those in need. Participating in tech donation programs ensures that unused devices are not only recycled but also repurposed to aid individuals in building digital skills and accessing essential services.
