In a notable move, Rakuten Symphony and AT&T have deepened their collaboration, aiming to enhance the reach of Open RAN technologies in the United States. This partnership, first announced in early 2022, focuses on leveraging Rakuten Symphony’s site management platform to support AT&T’s network simplification endeavors and accelerate Open RAN deployment nationwide.

The key goal of this collaboration is the modernization of AT&T’s network infrastructure by replacing outdated systems. Thanks to this partnership, more than 10,000 AT&T users now utilize Rakuten’s site management platform. This system streamlines mobile and fiber network planning and construction operations, ensuring efficient and smooth integration of new technologies.

Rakuten Symphony’s platform significantly boosts productivity, enabling the telecom giant to target the use of open and interoperable platforms for 70% of its wireless traffic by the end of 2026. By transitioning to a fully integrated solution within just 18 months, AT&T has managed this modernization without disrupting service.

This platform aligns with AT&T’s dual strategy of expanding fiber and advancing 5G networks through automated processes and enhanced monitoring capabilities. It also plays a crucial role in fiber expansion, a key focus for AT&T as it aims to reach 60 million fiber locations by 2030.

Alisha Remek, Vice President of Access Construction and Engineering at AT&T, credits Rakuten Symphony’s innovative approach to workflow orchestration as critical to their success. This partnership not only improves network efficiency but also supports AT&T’s broader network transformation objectives.

Investments exceeding $145 billion from 2020 to 2024 underline their commitment to expanding fiber and 5G infrastructure. As the broadband race heats up, these strategic improvements and partnerships place AT&T in a favorable position for future growth and customer satisfaction. With Erin Scarborough emphasizing a convergence strategy, the integration of fiber and wireless services aims to enhance customer retention and service efficiency.
