Deutsche Telekom reaches a wholesale deal with Telefónica
Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica have reached a wholesale FTTH deal. These telecom rivals extended their partnership that was launched in 2013, which allowed Telefónica to purchase VDSL lines from Deutsche Telekom. The renewed agreement has been extended for 10 more years, and now covers FTTH lines as well. This is a big opportunity for Telefónica Germany, as it is one of the smaller players in the fixed broadband market in the country. By using Deutsche Telekom’s fiber network, Telefónica has set up a clear path for itself to be an important participant in the growing ultra-fast broadband market.

Telia sells Telia Carrier
On Tuesday, the Swedish company Telia announced that it was selling its international carrier business to Swedish pension funds for $1.1 billion. Polhem Infra’s acquisition of Telia Carrier is expected to be completed in 2021, when it receives the approvals of the regulators. Telia Carrier is one of the world’s largest Tier 1 suppliers, with its global network serving over 300 points of presents (POPs) in 35 countries using its 65,000 kilometers of fiber. The transaction is expected to result in a capital increase of approximately $790 million.

Samsung growing in the 5G market
All three major South Korean mobile operators, LG Uplus, SK Telecom and KT, have reportedly placed orders for Samsung’s 28GHz 5G base stations. In recent months, Samsung has become increasingly popular as a major 5G player in the market. Earlier last month, the South Korean seller won a significant $6.6 billion contract with Verizon. 5G seems to be a huge opportunity for Samsung to establish itself within the giant supplier hierarchy. The mmWave sites will help deliver some of the promised, lightning-fast 5G solutions, including self-driving vehicles and augmented and virtual reality.
