Proximus has taken a significant step in Belgium’s technological landscape by launching the first 5G Standalone (SA) network, branded as 5G+. This development breaks new ground, allowing Belgian businesses and consumers to experience the extensive capabilities of a standalone 5G network.
This launch arrives at a crucial time, with European 5G SA connections forming a minuscule 2.8% of the total. In contrast, North America and China boast advanced adoption rates of 32% and 80%, respectively. The stark differences highlight the potential for growth in Europe’s 5G infrastructure.
The introduction of 5G+ by Proximus will be gradual. Initially, business customers with Mobile Connect and Together Mobile rate plans who own a compatible 5G+ SIM card will benefit. Currently, only Google’s Pixel 9 and 10 models support this network, though expansion plans are in place. The summer expansion will allow residential and small business customers, with eSIM integration planned.
While Proximus already covers 92% of the Belgian population with its 5G capability, it aims for nearly total nationwide coverage by the end of 2026. This broad coverage is instrumental in unlocking the 5G networks’ full potential for Belgian users, both domestic and commercial.
The operator emphasizes the advantages of a cloud-native core network. This innovation ensures enhanced stability during traffic surges and improved call quality thanks to Voice over 5G, or VoNR, which also allows for superior data service simultaneously. Such features pave the way for network slicing, which is crucial for specialized use cases such as emergency services, secure payments, and media applications.
5G+ networks support a higher number of connected devices and provide stronger encryption for SIMs and identity data. Geert Standaert, Network Lead at Proximus, stated, “We want to provide all our customers – residential and professional – with the best experience anytime, anywhere, and enable them to unlock the innovative potential of 5G technology…we are proud to be the first in Belgium to bring this next-generation 5G technology to Belgium.”
This milestone by Proximus not only propels Belgium forward in the race for 5G leadership but also sets a precedent for other European countries to follow suit, closing the adoption gap with North America and China. The phased rollout and continuous enhancements will likely accelerate the adoption of 5G SA, fostering innovation in various sectors through superior connectivity.
