In a bold move toward the future of telecommunications, Telstra and Ericsson have formalized a collaboration focused on 6G research and development. This partnership aims to push the boundaries of mobile connectivity, marking a shift in focus from mere speed advancements to intelligent network capabilities.
The agreement involves a comprehensive research strategy, including joint exploration of 6G standards and extensive testing in real-world scenarios. Engineers from Telstra will travel to Sweden to visit Ericsson’s testbed, while Ericsson staff will explore Telstra’s Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast. This cross-pollination is expected to enrich the findings and forge a robust understanding of 6G’s potential. Both companies emphasize the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in this new network era.
Shailin Sehgal, Telstra’s Group Executive of Global Networks & Technology, highlights 6G’s potential: “Mobile connectivity has been one of the most powerful economic engines of modern Australia. As the first G which is AI-native, 6G will be the most intelligent network yet – capable of advanced network connectivity, and new Network as a Product innovations such as the ability to sense the environment around the network. The latter opens the potential for new use cases for public safety, agriculture, weather detection and more.”
This sentiment is echoed by Erik Ekudden, Chief Technology Officer at Ericsson, who says: “We are on a clear and exciting trajectory – from 5G Standalone today, to AI-powered 5G and autonomous networks, towards AI-native 6G that is meeting the evolving and future business needs.”
These visionary statements underline the ambitious scope of the collaboration. By leveraging AI, the 6G networks will not only communicate more efficiently but will also intuitively adapt and orchestrate network resources. This ‘intelligent fabric’ could offer immense value to enterprises and society by optimizing service delivery across various fields.
Importantly, this partnership builds on a longstanding relationship between the two tech giants. Ericsson has been a key partner for Telstra in the Radio Access Network domain during the 5G era. Back then, the focus was primarily on achieving higher speeds. However, with 6G, the emphasis is shifting to AI-driven advantages and network optimization capabilities.
The collective expertise and experience of Telstra and Ericsson promise a promising trajectory for the development of 6G networks. As these companies delve into this journey, the telecommunications industry stands on the cusp of significant innovation. As AI becomes the backbone of 6G, networks’ capacity to comprehend, adapt, and improve will redefine connectivity, paving the way for new applications and opportunities.
