Microsoft is enhancing its Microsoft Teams Rooms on Android by rolling out SIP-based cross-platform meeting interoperability. This significant upgrade, expected to be globally available by mid-August 2026, will allow Android Teams Rooms devices to join platforms like Zoom, Cisco Webex, Google Meet, and others without needing secondary devices.
Historically, Windows-based Teams Rooms have had this capability since 2024, highlighting the delayed advancement for Android. The new feature will be deactivated by default, necessitating administrators to enable it. IT teams need to prepare, performing tests on lower-tier devices, checking Pro licensing, and consulting with Pexip on Cloud Video Interop (CVI) provisioning prior to the full rollout.
Until now, Android Rooms relied on Direct Guest Join, a WebRTC-based method that limits resolutions and lacks features like dual-screen support or HDMI content sharing. By contrast, SIP provides superior features, offering 1080p video quality and dual-screen support with HDMI ingest.
Graham Walsh, a Microsoft Teams MVP, pointed out these disparities, noting that Direct Guest Join tops out at 720p on a single screen. It embeds third-party platforms within the Teams Room interface but lacks SIP’s holistic native touch experiences and is limited to free licensing.
The broader implication lies in the seamless integration across mixed-device estates, a sentiment appreciated by experts like Anders Løkke of Pexip. He emphasizes that most organizations utilize mixed environments, and this update bridges a crucial interoperability gap, allowing Android rooms to join the uniform connectivity experienced by Windows counterparts.
While enabling this feature demands Teams Rooms Pro licensing and a SIP call plan from CVI partners, such as Pexip, it represents a forward leap for organizations.
