EXA Fibre Links Barcelona and Bilbao to Atlantic Corridor

EXA Infrastructure has expanded its European fibre footprint with a new terrestrial route. The link directly connects Barcelona and Bilbao. It creates a faster path between the Mediterranean and Atlantic network corridors.

The route matters because data traffic keeps growing across Europe. More cloud, video, enterprise, and AI workloads need reliable long-distance transport. Operators also need diverse routes when existing corridors face congestion or outages.

In practical terms, the route helps traffic from the Mediterranean region. It also supports flows from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. These markets can now reach transatlantic systems through a more direct Spanish path.

That should interest carriers, cloud providers, and large enterprise network teams. Shorter routes can reduce delays. They can also improve service resilience. This matters for real-time applications, financial traffic, and distributed cloud services.

However, new routes must prove their commercial value. Fibre builders face high construction and maintenance costs. They also need enough demand from carriers and data centre customers. Without strong traffic growth, returns can take longer.

The new link also passes through the Zaragoza region. This area has become a rising data centre market. Its central location supports routes between Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona, and wider Europe.

Zaragoza and the wider Aragón region have attracted major investment. AWS, Microsoft, and QTS are among the key names. The region could reach more than 1.6GW of data centre capacity by 2030.

This growth changes Spain’s role in European connectivity. Spain no longer serves only as a national market. It increasingly acts as an interconnection bridge between continents.

For telecoms providers, that creates new routing options. They can build services with better geographic diversity. They can also support customers seeking alternatives to traditional northern European paths.

At the same time, added infrastructure brings operational complexity. Providers must manage route diversity, capacity planning, and service guarantees. Customers will expect clear performance benefits before shifting traffic.

EXA already connects eight major data centres across Catalonia. The Barcelona-Bilbao route now extends that reach toward the Atlantic corridor. It also strengthens links to subsea cable systems serving North America.

“By extending our terrestrial long-haul footprint directly to the Atlantic corridor, we are giving our customers, and the subsea players that already land there, a genuinely shorter and more resilient path to transatlantic systems.”

The announcement reflects a wider shift in European network design. Data centres, subsea cables, and terrestrial fibre now shape each other. Spain’s internal routes may soon carry far more international traffic.
