Vodafone UK going big on OpenRAN
Vodafone UK has announced that they are deploying OpenRAN technology in rural base stations, as a key part of Huawei’s switching strategy. Approximately 2,600 sites in rural Wales and the south-west of England will be converted to OpenRAN by a deadline established by the government. This process will start in 2022 and, as yet, Vodafone has not identified any vendors to assist it in this initiative. The operator wants to be seen as an example of OpenRAN, which increasingly appears to be the most likely source of diversity for telecom providers since Huawei was blacklisted.

Deutsche Telekom partners with Zoom
Deutsche Telekom has become the latest service provider to partner with Zoom Video Communications. Deutsche Telekom is now the official reseller of Zoom in Germany. The company offers personalized solutions and contracts to customers of different sizes, and is able to give advice to each customer via the conference website. Zoom has been available on Deutsche Telekom’s conference and collaboration platform from the 2nd of October. Users can choose from a variety of products, including Zoom Meetings, Zoom Rooms and Zoom Webinars.

Ericsson and Telia partner for 5G deployment in Lithuania
Ericsson has announced that it will supply Telia equipment for its 5G deployment in Lithuania. This is the fourth contract awarded to the seller by an operator in the Nordic and Baltic countries. Ericsson stated that about 2,000 mobile sites will be upgraded over the next three years to introduce the fifth-generation technology. Ericsson currently has 114 commercial 5G contracts with service providers worldwide. This agreement follows earlier announced news by the two companies in Sweden, Estonia and Norway.

Liberty Global and Sunrise tie-up
The Swiss Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has overcome its concern regarding possible competition issues and has given consent for Sunrise to transfer its mobile radio licenses to Liberty Global as an agreement between the two companies. It was determined that Sunrise would continue to meet licensing requirements after the unification with Liberty Global, as it still had the mandatory technical capability to provide high-quality mobile radio services to its customers. Liberty Global offered to buy Sunrise for $7.4 billion in August, ultimately looking to turn the merged entity into a market player with a 30% share of the mobile subscribers, fixed broadband and TV customers segments.
