Amazon Acquires Globalstar – A Game-Changer in Satellite Telecom?

Amazon‘s bold move to acquire Globalstar for $11.5 billion marks a significant chapter in the evolving satellite communications landscape. This acquisition aims to bolster Amazon’s capabilities in the low-Earth orbit domain, where Starlink, by SpaceX, is currently a formidable competitor. With Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure, Amazon seeks to enhance its Amazon Leo initiative, providing direct-to-device (D2D) services. This tactical expansion is scheduled to articulate further from 2028.

In addition, Amazon deepens its ties with Apple by renewing a satellite airtime agreement. This ensures that Apple’s range of devices can leverage Globalstar’s network for critical communication services, enhancing user experience across the board. Emergency messaging, location services, and basic texting will see improved support.

The strategic purchase is not limited to satellite operations. It encompasses valuable spectrum assets, notably Globalstar’s L-band and S-band frequencies and terrestrial n53 spectrum. This allows Amazon to make a decisive reentry into the private 5G realm. Amazon had previously exited this space but appears poised to reengage with renewed vigor, aiming for robust private network solutions for enterprises.

Globalstar’s XCOM RAN, a subsidiary, will play a pivotal role by leveraging n53 licenses for 4G/5G services. These offerings will operate alongside shared n48 CBRS spectrum in the US. Consequently, Amazon strengthens its position in the private network sector after previously offering third-party solutions.

The acquisition is anticipated to conclude in 2027, awaiting regulatory approvals, including those from the FCC concerning satellite operations. Paul Jacobs, Globalstar’s CEO, emphasized the potential of LEO constellations to provide global connectivity solutions. “LEO satellite constellations offer the most effective path to connect users and devices anywhere and anytime.”

Simultaneously, the deal could signify a transformative moment for industrial automation. XCOM RAN has recently launched an “end-to-end” private 5G solution featuring both indoor and outdoor open RAN radios. This aligns with increasing industrial reliance on AI-driven automation.

While Amazon stands to gain considerable advantages from this acquisition, some industry observers suggest catching up with Starlink may remain challenging. Amazon Leo’s vision to offer continuous satellite connectivity in remote areas, regardless of geographical constraints, remains an ambitious undertaking.
